What is Pulp Capping?

Pulp capping is a dental procedure designed to protect and preserve the dental pulp (the living tissue inside the tooth) when it is very close to being exposed or has become exposed due to decay or accidental injury.

The goal is to help the pulp remain healthy and allow the tooth to continue developing and functioning naturally.

Why Might I Need Pulp Capping?

Pulp capping may be considered when:

• Tooth decay is very deep and close to the pulp
• The pulp becomes exposed during removal of deep decay
• The tooth experiences a minor traumatic injury
• The pulp is still considered healthy or capable of healing

Your dentist will assess the condition of the tooth and pulp before deciding whether pulp capping is appropriate.

What Are the Types of Pulp Capping?

There are two main types:

• Direct Pulp Capping – A protective material is placed directly over a small area of exposed pulp to encourage healing and protect it from further irritation.
• Indirect Pulp Capping – A protective material is placed over a very deep area of decay when the pulp has not been exposed. This helps protect the pulp while avoiding unnecessary removal of the deepest portion of affected tooth structure.

Does Pulp Capping Hurt?

The procedure is generally comfortable, particularly when local anesthesia is used. Some temporary sensitivity or discomfort may occur afterward, depending on the condition of the tooth.

Can Pulp Capping Prevent a Root Canal?

In appropriately selected cases, pulp capping may help preserve the vitality of the pulp and avoid root canal treatment. However, it is not suitable for every deeply decayed or exposed tooth. The success of treatment depends on the condition of the pulp and other factors.

How Do I Know If My Tooth Is Suitable for Pulp Capping?

Your dentist will evaluate:

• The depth and extent of decay
• Whether the pulp is exposed
• The condition of the pulp
• Your symptoms and clinical findings
• X-ray findings, when required

Based on these findings, your dentist will determine whether pulp capping or another treatment is more appropriate.

What Happens If Pulp Capping Is Not Suitable?

If the pulp is significantly inflamed, infected, or unable to heal, pulp capping may not be appropriate. In such cases, root canal treatment or another suitable treatment may be recommended depending on the condition of the tooth.

How Long Does Pulp Capping Take?

The procedure is usually completed as part of the tooth restoration and may often be completed in one appointment. The exact treatment time depends on the depth and condition of the affected tooth.

When Should I Visit a Dentist?

If you have tooth sensitivity, pain, deep decay, pain after eating sweets or cold foods, or a recently injured tooth, arrange a dental examination. Early assessment may help determine whether the pulp can still be preserved.
