What Is SDF?

Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) is a topical dental treatment used to help arrest or slow the progression of active tooth decay. It is particularly useful in selected situations where conventional restorative treatment may be difficult or when a minimally invasive approach is appropriate.

When Is SDF Recommended for Children?

SDF may be considered for active cavities in primary or permanent teeth when the tooth is clinically suitable for the treatment. It can be particularly useful for young children, patients with multiple cavities, or situations where conventional treatment cannot be completed immediately.

How Does SDF Work?

SDF contains silver and fluoride components. Silver has antimicrobial properties, while fluoride helps strengthen tooth structure and support resistance to further decay. The treatment helps arrest the progression of certain active carious lesions.

Does SDF Hurt?

SDF application itself is generally quick and minimally invasive and does not usually require drilling or local anesthesia. However, the tooth must still be assessed to determine whether SDF alone is appropriate.

Will SDF Make the Tooth Black?

Yes. One of the most important considerations of SDF is that the active decayed portion of the tooth typically becomes dark or black after treatment. Healthy, unaffected tooth structure is generally not intended to be darkened in the same way.

Does SDF Replace a Filling?

Not always. SDF can help arrest or slow decay, but it does not restore the lost shape or structure of a cavitated tooth. Depending on the child’s condition and treatment goals, a restoration may still be recommended.

How Often Does SDF Need to Be Applied?

The treatment schedule depends on the individual tooth, activity of the decay, oral hygiene, and clinical response. Periodic reassessment is important, and repeat application may be recommended when appropriate.

Is SDF Suitable for Every Cavity?

No. SDF is not appropriate for every dental condition. Teeth with certain symptoms, extensive structural damage, or other complications may require conventional restorative or pulp therapy treatment instead.
