Treats infection or damage inside a tooth, helping relieve pain and preserve the natural tooth whenever possible.

Root Canal Treatment (RCT) is a dental procedure used to treat infection or inflammation inside a tooth, where the dental pulp (nerve and blood supply) has been affected by deep decay, trauma, or other damage. The infected or damaged pulp is removed, the inside of the tooth is cleaned and sealed, helping preserve the natural tooth whenever possible.
Possible signs include:
Sometimes, a tooth may require root canal treatment without causing noticeable symptoms, which is why a dental examination is important.
With modern dental techniques and appropriate local anesthesia, RCT is generally performed comfortably. The treatment is intended to remove the source of infection and relieve dental pain, although mild tenderness may occur for a few days after treatment.
The number of appointments depends on the condition of the tooth, the complexity of the root canals, the presence of infection, and other individual factors. Some cases can be completed in one visit, while others may require multiple appointments.
Not every root-treated tooth necessarily requires a crown. However, teeth that have lost significant structure—particularly back teeth—may benefit from a crown or another suitable restoration to protect the remaining tooth. Your dentist will assess the tooth and recommend the appropriate restoration.
When a tooth can be successfully treated and restored, preserving the natural tooth is generally considered whenever possible. Extraction removes the tooth and may subsequently require replacement with another treatment. Your dentist can discuss the condition of the tooth and available treatment options with you.
