What is Pus Drainage?

Pus drainage addresses the collection of infection, but definitive treatment of the underlying cause is usually required to prevent recurrence.

When is Pus Drainage Recommended?

Pus drainage may be indicated when a dental infection has resulted in a localized collection of pus, such as a dental abscess. It may be considered when there is:

• Localized swelling of the gum or surrounding tissues
• A visible gum boil or pus discharge
• Pain or tenderness associated with an abscess
• A fluctuant or localized collection of pus
• Swelling associated with an infected tooth

The dentist will assess the source and extent of the infection before deciding on the appropriate treatment.

What Causes Dental Pus?

Dental pus generally develops as a result of a bacterial infection. Common causes include:

• Deep tooth decay leading to pulp infection
• Infection of a previously root-treated tooth
• Advanced gum or periodontal infection
• Infection associated with an impacted or partially erupted tooth
• Dental trauma or other conditions affecting the tooth

Does Pus Drainage Hurt?

Local anesthesia may be used to minimize discomfort during the procedure. Patients often experience relief from pressure and pain once the pus has been effectively drained. Mild tenderness may remain for a short period during healing.

Is Pus Drainage a Complete Treatment?

Not necessarily. Drainage helps control the localized collection of pus, but the underlying source of infection must also be addressed.

Depending on the cause, definitive treatment may include:

• Root canal treatment
• Re-root canal treatment
• Periodontal treatment
• Tooth extraction, when the tooth cannot be predictably preserved

How Long Does Pus Drainage Take?

The duration depends on the location, size, and severity of the infection and the treatment required. Simple drainage procedures may be relatively brief, while additional treatment may require further appointments.

What Happens If a Dental Abscess Is Left Untreated?

A dental infection should not be ignored even if the pain temporarily decreases. An untreated infection may spread to surrounding tissues, bone, or other areas of the face and neck, potentially resulting in a more serious condition.
