What Is a Denture?

A denture is a removable dental prosthesis used to replace one or more missing teeth. It helps restore chewing function, speech, facial support, and overall appearance. Dentures can be designed to replace some missing teeth (partial dentures) or all teeth in one or both arches (complete dentures).

What Types of Dentures Are Available?

Depending on the number of missing teeth, oral condition, and individual needs, dentures may be:

  • Partial Denture – Used when some natural teeth remain. A partial denture replaces missing teeth while fitting around the existing teeth.
  • Complete Denture – Used when all natural teeth are missing from the upper or lower arch. It replaces the complete set of teeth in that arch.
  • Acrylic Denture – Made primarily from acrylic resin. Acrylic dentures are commonly used for both partial and complete tooth replacement and can be relatively economical and easy to modify or repair.
  • Flexible Denture – Made from a flexible, tooth-colored material that can provide a more discreet appearance and comfortable adaptation in selected cases.

When Is a Denture Recommended?

Dentures may be recommended when several teeth or all teeth are missing and replacement is required to improve oral function and appearance. They may also be considered when other tooth-replacement options, such as fixed bridges or implants, are not suitable or preferred.

What Are the Advantages and Limitations of Acrylic and Flexible Dentures?

Acrylic Dentures – Advantages

  • Generally more economical
  • Suitable for partial and complete dentures
  • Relatively easy to adjust, repair, or modify
  • Can be fabricated in different designs according to clinical requirements

Acrylic Dentures – Limitations

  • May feel bulkier than some other denture materials
  • Can fracture if dropped or subjected to excessive force
  • May require periodic adjustment as the gums and supporting tissues change

Flexible Dentures – Advantages

  • Flexible and lightweight
  • Often provides a more natural-looking appearance
  • Can be useful in selected partial denture cases
  • Usually does not require visible metal clasps

Flexible Dentures – Limitations

  • Not suitable for every clinical situation
  • Adjustments and repairs may be more challenging than with acrylic dentures
  • Long-term suitability depends on oral conditions, design, and proper care

What Is the Process of Getting a Denture?

The process generally begins with an oral examination and assessment of the remaining teeth and supporting tissues. Impressions or digital records may then be taken to design the denture. A trial stage may be performed to evaluate fit, tooth arrangement, appearance, and bite before the final denture is completed.

Will a New Denture Feel Comfortable Immediately?

Some adjustment is usually required when wearing a new denture. Mild pressure, increased saliva, or difficulty speaking certain words may occur initially. With regular use and appropriate adjustment, most patients gradually become accustomed to their dentures. Persistent pain, looseness, or significant discomfort should be assessed by the dentist.

How Should I Care for My Denture?

Dentures should be cleaned regularly to remove food debris and plaque. They should be handled carefully and cleaned using appropriate denture-cleaning methods. Unless specifically advised otherwise, dentures are generally removed during sleep to allow the oral tissues to rest. Regular dental examinations are also important to evaluate the fit of the denture and the health of the mouth.

How Long Does a Denture Last?

The lifespan of a denture varies depending on the material, oral conditions, bite forces, and daily care. Over time, changes in the gums, jawbone, and remaining teeth can affect the fit even if the denture itself remains intact. Periodic evaluation is therefore important, and replacement or adjustment may eventually be required.

When Should I See a Dentist About My Denture?

You should consult your dentist if the denture becomes loose, causes persistent soreness, cracks or breaks, affects your ability to chew or speak, or no longer fits properly. Regular follow-up helps maintain both denture function and oral health.
