What Is a Pulpotomy?
A pulpotomy is a pulp therapy procedure commonly performed on primary teeth when the coronal portion of the dental pulp is affected by decay or trauma while the remaining pulp tissue within the roots may still be suitable for preservation.
When Is a Pulpotomy Recommended?
A pulpotomy may be considered when a primary tooth has extensive decay or trauma involving the pulp but the tooth remains restorable and the remaining radicular pulp is clinically suitable for treatment.
How Is a Pulpotomy Performed?
The dentist removes the affected coronal pulp tissue, controls bleeding, places an appropriate medicament or restorative material, and seals the tooth with a suitable restoration. A crown may be recommended when substantial tooth structure has been lost.
Does a Pulpotomy Hurt?
The procedure is performed under local anesthesia to maintain the child’s comfort. Mild sensitivity or discomfort may occur afterward, but significant or persistent pain should be assessed by the dentist.
What Are the Benefits of Pulpotomy?
The primary goal is to preserve the baby tooth when appropriate. Maintaining the tooth can support chewing, speech, dental development, and preservation of space for the permanent successor.
Is Pulpotomy the Same as Pulpectomy?
No. In a pulpotomy, the affected coronal pulp is removed while suitable radicular pulp is preserved. In a pulpectomy, the infected or necrotic pulp tissue is removed from the entire root canal system.
What Happens After a Pulpotomy?
The treated tooth requires an appropriate final restoration and periodic dental monitoring. Parents should maintain good oral hygiene and attend follow-up appointments as recommended.
