What is Tooth Extraction?

Tooth extraction is the careful removal of a tooth from its socket when the tooth cannot be predictably preserved or when removal is necessary for the patient’s oral health. The procedure may be performed as a routine extraction or may require a surgical approach depending on the condition and position of the tooth.

When is Tooth Extraction Recommended?

Extraction may be considered when a tooth has:

• Extensive decay that cannot be adequately restored
• Severe infection or an abscess that cannot be predictably managed by other treatment
• Advanced periodontal disease with significant loss of supporting bone
• Extensive fracture or structural damage
• An impacted or partially erupted tooth causing problems
• Insufficient space or other orthodontic considerations
• A primary (deciduous) tooth that requires removal
• Other clinical conditions where retaining the tooth is not advisable

Whenever possible, preservation of a natural tooth is considered before extraction.

What Types of Tooth Extraction Are Performed?

1. Deciduous Tooth Extraction

Removal of a primary (baby) tooth when it is significantly damaged, infected, retained beyond its expected period, or otherwise requires extraction. In children, the timing of extraction is carefully considered to support appropriate dental development.

2. Routine Tooth Extraction

A routine extraction is performed when the tooth can be removed through the normal extraction technique without the need for surgical removal. Local anesthesia is used to maintain patient comfort.

3. Surgical Tooth Extraction

A surgical extraction may be required when a tooth is impacted, fractured, difficult to access, or not suitable for routine extraction. The procedure may involve making a small incision in the gum and, when necessary, removing a limited amount of surrounding bone or sectioning the tooth into smaller portions.

Is Tooth Extraction Painful?

The extraction is performed under local anesthesia, so significant pain during the procedure is generally avoided. Some soreness, swelling, or mild discomfort may occur after the anesthesia wears off. Surgical extractions may involve more postoperative discomfort than routine extractions.

How Long Does Tooth Extraction Take?

The duration depends on the tooth’s location, root anatomy, condition, and the type of extraction required. A straightforward extraction may be relatively quick, while a complex or surgical extraction may require additional time.

What Should I Avoid After Tooth Extraction?

To support proper healing, patients are generally advised to follow their dentist’s postoperative instructions and avoid activities that may disturb the blood clot, such as vigorous rinsing or unnecessary manipulation of the extraction site. Smoking or tobacco use can also interfere with healing.

Are There Any Risks or Complications?

As with any dental procedure, extraction can have potential complications. These may include postoperative bleeding, swelling, infection, delayed healing, dry socket, or temporary discomfort. Certain extractions may carry additional risks depending on the tooth’s position and surrounding anatomical structures.
