What Is a Pulpectomy?

A pulpectomy is a pulp therapy procedure in which infected, inflamed, or necrotic pulp tissue is removed from the crown and root canals of a primary tooth. The canals are then cleaned, disinfected, filled with an appropriate material, and the tooth is restored.

When Is a Pulpectomy Recommended?

A pulpectomy may be recommended when a baby tooth has extensive decay or trauma resulting in irreversible pulp inflammation, pulp necrosis, or infection, provided that the tooth remains restorable.

What Are the Signs That a Baby Tooth May Need Pulpectomy?

Possible signs include persistent toothache, sensitivity or pain that continues after stimulation, swelling, a dental abscess, pus discharge, or other clinical and radiographic evidence of pulp infection.
